How to use Mooncup

Designed to be an alternative to other conventional period products, Mooncup should be as easy to use as other products. But it can sometimes take up to 2-3 cycles to completely feel comfortable with the Mooncup. One important thing to note is that this product is reusable, economical, and can last for years. Let’s dive into how to properly use Mooncup.

Mooncup review 1

Step 1: Wash your hands

Same with any other period products out there, sanitization is extremely important. Make sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap before inserting the product.

Step 2: Fold

You are recommended to fold the Mooncup properly before inserting it. Our body is unique so you should play around with it, try experimenting with as many folding techniques as possible to find the one that best suit your body.

Here are some recommended folding techniques from Mooncup:

  • C fold: Press down the product then fold it in half creating a C shape.
  • Punch down fold: Press down the product on one side and then hold it at that position
  • 7 fold: Similar to the C fold, but after pressing down the product, you will then fold it diagonally line instead of horizontally
  • Origami: This is the combination of the punch down fold and 7 fold. After pressing down the product on one side and then folding it diagonally
  • Twist: First, you will do the punch down fold and then at that position, you will continue to fold the product in half and you will get the Twist.

Step 3: Insert

Part the labia and place the cup in a comfortable position in the lower part of the vagina (this is lower than a tampon). Be sure to leave a gap between the rim of the cup and the cervix.

Important notice: Since the cup will be situated in the lowest part of the vagina, you might have to cut off some parts of the stem to get the best fit for you. This is because different people will have different vaginal lengths.

Step 4: Remove and empty

Gently squeeze the bottom of the cup to let go of the seal then slowly pull the cup out. Empty the remains into the toilet. You should do this every 4 to 8 hours.

Step 5: Rinse or wipe and reinsert

After every empty cycle, it is best to rinse your product with clean water or if you do not have access to a nearby water supply, tissue can also be a good replacement.

Pros

Environment-friendly

On average, a woman will spend roughly 6 and a half years menstruating which will create about 11,000 disposable sanitary products and around $1700 spent on period products. This not only makes your yearly expenditure increase drastically but also creates a great burden on our environment. All those plastic waste will harm our environment in unimaginable ways.

The Mooncup was born to change this situation. Normal period products contain plastic which can intoxicate our body with harmful chemicals, while the Mooncup is made from 100% safe silicone that is non-absorbent and will not mess up the natural balance of your body.

Women-friendly

One of the most common problems that tampon users often face is that on heavier days, they will feel the constant need of changing their products for fear of leakage, and on lighter days, the absorbent nature of the product can completely dry them out. The Mooncup solves this complex problem so brilliantly. First of all, silicone - the material of the Mooncup ensures that the product will not sponge up all of your natural moisture which makes lighter days feel much more comfortable. Secondly, The cup-shaped products make it 3 times more efficient at holding menstrual liquid than a regular tampon or pad which makes for more lasting protection on heavier days.

Have you ever come across a situation in which you have no spare left and you cannot go to the store to buy new stocks? Well then, we have all been there. Having to carry around an uncomfortable amount of spare products or stocking when it’s that time of the month is like enduring another pain on top of an already uncomfortable period. Say goodbye to all of that with the purchase of one single product - the Mooncup. No more last-minute sprinting to the store, no more having to choose from a wide variety of products for different days, and most importantly no more spares and monthly spending on period products. You will save much more with Mooncup. Just look at the price comparison and you will see a world of difference!

Cons

The Mooncup might not be the easiest thing to use. Unlike other period products where a simple instruction on the packaging is enough, Mooncup would require full-on research. This might be a bit over-stating but it’s true that you will have to read the instruction carefully before using Mooncup or you will face a ton of problems.

Let’s start with the insertion of the Mooncup. As stated earlier, to properly use a Mooncup, it is advised that you know certain kinds of folding techniques. And to get the best experience you might need to invest your time into finding what is best for you.

The Mooncup isn’t messy but we have to admit that it isn’t always clean to use either. You only have to take out the cup, rinse it and then put it back on, simple as that right? Well, the truth is it is much more complicated than that. In a public restroom, we wouldn’t say that this is a pleasant process. On top of that, when your time of the month is over you will have to boil it up and store it in a clean container. We are not saying that this is something tedious to do but it would be hard to explain why you are boiling a silicone cup for others.

It is true that you do not have to remove Mooncup as regularly as tampons because it can hold more menstrual liquid than tampons. But believe us, when you do have to remove and forget to do so, or it’s a heavy day, leakage will be extremely unpleasant.

Mooncup reviews from users

At the dawn of the company, one of the most commonly asked questions about Mooncup was “What kind of person uses a Mooncup?” And their answer was there is no such thing as a typical Mooncup user. Each of them is unique, coming together for a purpose: to have a strong positive impact on both their health and the planet.

Let’s meet 5 real Mooncup users and listen to their stories about how Mooncup has impacted their lives.

Emilie - Waste Minimisation and Enforcement Officer admitted that she used to flush her tampons. At that time, she didn’t know that the products contain plastic. She assumed they were just cotton thread and flushing them down the toilet wouldn’t do any harm. And when finding out about Mooncup, she was skeptical at first, but knowing that by using the product she was actually making a positive impact on the environment, it started to grow on her. By now, Emilie is proud to be a user as well as an active advocate of Mooncup.

“Why didn’t I do this years ago?” This is the question that Michelle, an actress, asked herself when using Mooncup. The product does wonders to her body, to the point that it feels like her body just restarts itself. “My cycles are back to their original timelines. My periods are definitely less painful (with the Mooncup). It’s just allowing the body to do what it needs to do.” These are her words when being asked about her feelings when using Mooncup.

Training on your period wouldn’t be such a nightmare. Lizi, a full-time personal trainer who works in a gym in London, experiences life much easier with Mooncup. For her, Mooncup is more about the experience of being able to carry on her daily life as if nothing happens. No matter what time of the month she’s on, she can still do whatever she needs to do. She can still go to the gym, work out like usual, train people the way she wants, and more importantly, wear gym clothes.

In many cultures, menstruation is a big taboo subject. It is considered something to be ashamed of rather than something that occurs naturally. With the appearance of Mooncup, somehow it has become more acceptable, not only women but also men are more open to this subject. “We’ve been made this way and nothing can stop us from being great women.” That’s how Jaineesha, a makeup artist, feels about Mooncup and how the product makes her feel so empowered.

Period products shouldn’t be made so expensive. Holly, a university student who has used Mooncup since the age of 15 recommended it to her peers since, in the long run, it would be so worth it. If you are on a budget, you can still get your menstrual cup with our Mooncup special discounts.
